You know - the static pages accessible from a menu (or tab) bar across the top. Today I finally got around to doing that. I added a "Resources and Links" page (or tab, if you prefer that term). There isn't much there yet, but I've started with a list of tutorial sites for photoshop as well as the main geocaching site. (I'll leave off genealogy links as I already have them posted on a page on my genealogy blog.)

Any way, what I very quickly discovered is that to customize the tab bar within the blogger designer tool necessitated that I switch to one of their "new" template designs. The alternative was to leave the tab bar unstyled or wade through the html code to figure out how the tab bar was implemented and then generate my own CSS code or customize the html directly. (Ugh!!!) Since a quick google search didn't come up with any solutions, I took the "easy" way out and switched to a different template - the one called Travel.

It's not too bad but it's static width. The old template, Minima Stretch, was variable width. Variable width windows will automatically adjust their content (at least to a degree) when the browser window is stretched or compressed by dragging on the left or right sides of the window. I really like that feature and it is the reason I was using Minima Stretch in the first place. Well, c'est la vie. Guess I'll just have to get used to the static window. More likely I'll just have to keep checking for a variable-width blogger template or for someone to post a reasonably quick and easy method for customizing a tab menu bar for the Minima template.

That's it for now. Look for more resources to be added to the "Resource and Links" page shortly!

Reviewing the Flip Pal Mobile Scanner

My birthday was a few months back and, yep, I asked for a Flip-Pal Scanner. When it was first introduced there was a lot of buzz about it in both the digital scrap booking community as well as the genealogy community - and since I'm active in both, what could be a better gift!

Since it's truly portable (it requires no computer, no electrical cords) I was mostly envisioning taking it along when visiting relatives to get copies of their old (and not so old) photos, etc on the spot. And, yes, I've done that. But I also have this monstrous scanning job of my own photos. What I am very slowly trying to do is scan all of my pre-digital photos. And believe me, there are probably at least a couple of thousand. (I'm not kidding or exaggerating!) This includes photos of my kids when they were babies, vacations, holidays, family parties, weddings, etc. It's just too hard for me to choose what to scan and what not to, so unless it's really blurry or unflattering, I'm scanning it all!

I started doing all the scanning with my old, trusty flat bed scanner. Over the course of several days last fall, I got through about 300-400 photos. Then the whole project went to the back-burner. One of the problems with scanning on the flat bed, was that I was pretty much tied to the room where the computer and scanner were set up. So I've restarted the project with the Flip-Pal and it's been a little easier to work it in around accomplishing other activities and chores since I can take it anywhere in the house. (I could go out to the patio, but too much wind and too much pollen!!)

Since I've been using it so much, I thought I probably have enough experience with it at this point to write a review. I'll start with the pros.

Obviously, the fact that it's light-weight and mobile is a big pro.

It scans at 600 dpi. (Without going into a long discussion, 600 dpi is the resolution that I decided on for scanning my snapshots prior to even knowing about the existence of the Flip-Pal).

Scans are saved to a removable memory card. Extra cards can be purchased just about anywhere.

The Flip-Pal includes stitching software to create one large file from multiple scans. (I haven't had the need to use this feature, but the fact that it's available is a plus.)

You can remove the top cover and flip it. So you are essentially using it upside down. The bottom is clear, so you can easily see what you are going to be scanning. This is a fantastic feature not only for large items, but also for scanning photos that have been pasted in a scrapbook.

And the cons:

The placement of the scan button is such that I constantly (and I do mean constantly) accidentally hit it - particularly when I've taken the cover off and flipped it.

Battery life is so-so.

As far as I can tell only scans to jpeg format. - I included this as a con because some people are likely to view it as such. For me, it's not that big of a deal.

There's one last point that I wanted to make. Again, some may view it as a con, but I think it is more a by-product of the portability/convenience of the unit itself. Scans are always 4x6. If you have a larger item, you need to make multiple scans and stitch them together. If you have smaller items (like 3x5 or other odd sized photos or ephemera - love that word!) you will have white space around them. In other words, in the case of a 3x5 photo, you'll have an inch of white on the bottom and one of the sides. If the white space bothers you, you will need to crop the scanned image in some sort of photo editor to get rid of it - you could probably even set up a batch process to do the crop. This idea of a fixed 4x6 scanning area is a little different than a flat bed scanner (at least my flat-bed scanner). In that case I can drag a bounding box around whatever it is that I want to scan. And assuming that what I want to scan is rectangular in shape the resulting image has no extraneous white space or white borders.

The bottom line - this is a great scanner for both genealogists and scrapbookers. It's the perfect gadget to take to the next family reunion -- just don't forget to bring along some extra batteries!!!

P.S. If you need more information here's the official website: http://flip-pal.com/

An Update, A Layout and A Plug for the Genealogy Community!

It's been a while, so I thought I would post a quick update on this blog. A couple of weeks ago I got a new computer. The old computer was just slowly grinding to a halt. Despite off-loading all my photos to an external drive, I was still running out of disk space and photoshop was really straining the resources of the relatively puny processor. So I found a pretty good deal and decided to go for it! I am loving Windows 7 - and the extra RAM and bigger hard drive. And photoshop is really humming along with the i5 processor! So all is good - it's just taking a while to reload all my programs. I'm kind of doing that on an as-needed basis.

Anyway, I had to test out the new system and what better way than to create a mini-scrap book kit! So I made a free mini that's available on my designsbyjmdt blog. And here's a layout I made with the kit.

If you'd like the kit, feel free to grab it. The download links are on my other blog.

Now in other news, I am making a concerted effort to become a more active blogger in the genealogy world. I started a genealogy blog back in 2008, but my posting on that blog has been very sporadic. So I recently joined Geneabloggers and am going to try posting based on their daily prompts at least a couple of times a week. If you are interested in genealogy or family history, check out my genealogy blog here. There is also a link to Geneabloggers on my genealogy blog if you'd like to check them out too.

That's about it for now. Till later.
~jmdt

Book Review: The Mating, The Keeping, The Finding by Nicky Charles

I really love to read -- so for me one of the best things about the Nook is the ability to download free books! You can find some on the B&N website as well as other sites such as SmashWords. My genre of choice is mystery novels; and when I find an author I like, I tend to buy (or sometimes borrow) as many books as I can find by that author. What I've found with e-books, however, is that if I want to take advantage of the books being offered free, I need to expand out to other genres. So it was with some trepidation that I decided to try the werewolf series (The Mating, The Keeping and the The Finding) by Nicky Charles. These books are available for free both at SmashWords and (for the time being at least) at Barnes&Noble. I would definitely recommend them!

Unlike some free e-books, these are full-sized novels - the page count on The Mating is 251, The Keeping is 347 and The Finding is a whopping 1120! While the later books can be read and understood independent of the earlier ones, I read them in order and would recommend that. They can probably loosely be described as love stories in that each book focuses on a couple and how that couple meets and eventually gets together - although at over a thousand pages, the third book has quite a few sub-plots interwoven. The whole series hangs together really well in that minor characters in an earlier book become the main characters of a later book. Conversely, we also get glimpses of how the relationships from the earlier books are evolving as these characters become minor characters in the later books.

Without delving into the actual story lines, I would just like to say that in general I found the books to be very well-written, easy to follow and generally a fast and enjoyable read! Perhaps they are a little predictable in that they follow the basic boy meets girl, boy and girl overcome obstacle(s), boy and girl get together in the end. But with all the stress, turmoil and problems of real-life, a book with a feel-good story and happy ending is often just what I want!

My bottom line is give these books a try. Even if you are not into the whole werewolf fantasy thing, you might find that you really enjoy this series!

Giving Google Reader a Try

As a recent convert to Google Chrome and Google Calendar I can't believe I am writing about starting up with yet another Google product! Now it's Google Reader and here's how it came about.

The other day I watched an archived webinar from Millennia Corporation (makers of Legacy Family Tree) on blogging for beginners. The presenter was Pat Richie, better known as Dear Myrtle. She gave a really nice presentation on how to get started with blogger. But the part that peaked my interest was a little side discussion about subscribing to blogs and using Google Reader.

Previously, well, actually a few years ago, I downloaded and installed an RSS reader add-on for my firefox browser. I subscribed to a few genealogy blogs as well as some technology and news ones (this was before I got into digital scrapbooking, so none of those at that time - LOL). But after getting it all set up and using it for a couple of months, I was finding that it just did not seem that useful to me, and so I eventually just stopped using it all together.

Shortly thereafter I started getting involved in digital scrapbooking - and from the beginning I knew that I wanted to learn how to design my own papers and elements. I joined a yahoo "learning" group and everyone was talking about designing freebies and setting up a blog. Now I already had a genealogy blog on wordpress, but, of course, I wanted to create a scrapbooking blog too. So I started this one on blogger because blogger allows for more flexibility in the customization of the layout and the background.

In addition to that, Blogger/Google has implemented a feature called "following." It's similar to subscribing, but not exactly the same. When I got immersed in the digital scrapbooking world, I started "following" other blogs because, let's face it, that's where designers post their freebies!

Now I know that you can read the blogs you follow from your blogger dashboard - but I just never really got used to that. So for the last year or so I've just surfed the blogs periodically to check for new postings. I know - not very efficient! Well, Dear Myrtle was just singing the praises of Google Reader. It handles "followed" blogs, as well as sites that allow you to subscribe through an RSS feed. Bottom line -- she sold me on it! I've set it up and I'm giving it a try. Hopefully I'll still be using it in a couple of months!!

Checking out Google Chrome Browser

For several years I've been a devotee of the Firefox browser (can't actually remember when I last used IE regularly, but I think it was back on version 6!). But lately Firefox has been a little sluggish at times, so I decided to give Google Chrome a try. I've been using it for about a week and the bottom line is .... I really like it! I had heard that it is fast, but since there are so many factors affecting web surfing speed, I was skeptical that a browser could make that much of a difference. I have to admit I was wrong. Chrome is actually noticeably faster. It's also very intuitive and easy to use.

The biggest drawback at this point is that doesn't have nearly as many add-ons as Firefox. One that I really miss is an integrated ftp tool like Fireftp. While I do have a stand-alone ftp program (Filezilla), when I'm making quick changes to my genealogy website it has been really convenient just open Fireftp as a tab within Firefox. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Chrome doesn't have an equivalent add-on. The other main drawback (and this is a big one for me) is that the enhanced image viewer at Ancestry.com doesn't work with Chrome. For that reason alone, I'll definitely still use Firefox when I need to do research at Ancestry.

On the other hand, I did find at least one amazing Chrome add-on called "Awesome Screenshot: Capture and Annotate" -- and it fully lives up to its name!! I was using it in combination with google newspaper archive search for my genealogy research. I was able to digitally snip out articles of interest (like old obituaries) from the browser (Chrome) window, annotate them with the newspaper name and date and save the annotated clips on my computer. Awesome!! I just know I'll be using that feature a lot!!

Anyway, just thought I'd write this quick post on Chrome. Bottom line -- give it a try!

I love my Nook!!

I have really been ignoring this blog for a while now, so I thought I would write a quick post about one of my favorite "toys."

Last July, shortly before we left for a week's vacation, I bought a Barnes and Noble Nook. This was right after they announced the WiFi-only nook and dropped the price on the original. I went to the store fully prepared to buy the WiFi only, but wound up going for the original with both WiFi and 3G. (This, of course, was long before the ColorNook became available.) I decided to buy it because I generally like to take several paperbacks on vacation and this seemed like a good, space-saving alternative.

Well, in the last six months or so since I got it, it has become on of my favorite toys! The e-ink is very easy on the eyes and I find it much easier to hold, flip pages, etc than a regular paper book. I have also taken advantage of the free books available at Barnes & Noble and downloaded virtually all of them. Hence I have read genres that I have never bothered with before. Some of it is barely worth reading, but some of the free books are real gems! I have also downloaded books from other sites like smashwords, google books, internet archive and others. And I have borrowed ebooks from our local library as well. And did I mention there is also a web browser....

Bottom line, if you like to read, you should definitely consider a Nook. Best of all, you can go to your neighborhood Barnes and Noble store and give it a try before you buy!!

Geocaching Washout!! Ugh!!

Well we finally have an absolutely beautiful Saturday and no other plans for the day, so the youngest and I decided to go geocaching! I guess the popularity of geocaching must be picking up around here, because when I logged on to find caches in the area that we haven't found yet there were actually quite a few. We found three in a fairly close area only about 3 or so miles from our house -- that's three miles as the crow flies, so the real distance is actually a bit further. Anyway, I guess we've been away from it for too long and we've lost our geo-sense because we had no luck on either of the first two we tried -- and they were supposed to be easy. I hate when that happens. :( And of course I neglected to print out the hints, which actually probably would have helped quite a bit. The third one we couldn't even try because the road was closed. So total wash out. Oh, well, there's always next time.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mydigitaldiversion.blogspot.com/2010/03/geocaching-washout-ugh.html' title='Geocaching Washout!! Yes, I answered a design call and was accepted! The store is relatively new and is called A Moment in Scrap. I have posted more information about the store and about my debut kit over on my scrapbooking design blog: http://designbyjmdt.blogspot.com. (Of course, I'll add a previews to the end of this post also!)

I've also decided to officially change the focus of this blog to general musings. I'll be posting all scrapbook-related stuff on my designsbyjmdt blog.

So here are the previews (by the way, Irish Eyes is a freebie!):

Thanks for looking and don't forget to check my other blog.

~J

Learning Photoshop

Here is it mid-February and as of yet I haven't posted any freebies on my other blog. There's actually a couple of reasons: with all the snow my kids have had a really long, extended vacation the past week; I've gotten a couple of genealogy-related emails that have prompted me to do some (as of yet unfruitful) research; and I downloaded and am trying out photoshop! Yes, after all these years of being a HUGE fan of PSP, I decided to give photoshop cs4 a trial run.

It all started with Corel releasing a new version of PSP. I downloaded the 30-trial and was really disappointed in the new feature set. They really focused on some of the photo-editing features, and particularly work flow using the organizer. Personally, I am not a big fan of the organizer. In earlier releases it slowed my computer down so much so that I created my custom workspace without it - and, yes, PSP performance on my computer was greatly increased without it!! What I was most hoping for was better text support -- like creating text within a shape -- and also better support of layer styles.

So the timing could not have been more ripe when a few days after checking out PSP X3, I got an email from Adobe for a special offer for Photoshop CS4! So I downloaded the trial to give it a try. The last week or so I have been trying out all the photoshop tutorials I can get my hands on (one of the best sites is scrapbook-bytes). I am absolutely loving clipping masks and layer styles!! Naturally I'm still on a learning curve with much of the product. It's a little frustrating - especially learning a new set of keyboard short cuts, but I am really enjoying the added functionality that I have come across so far!!

At this point, I am trying to learn the product better by working on tutorials and making some scrapbook layouts. Hopefully before long I'll be back to creating some papers and elements. So stay tuned - I will hopefully have more freebies ready soon!!

P.S. A special thank you to Rachel who left a comment on my last blog post confirming that Shutterfly books are glued, not sewed. It is, however, reassuring to know that Shutterfly stood behind their product when some pages came loose from her photobook.

My First Shutterfly Photobook

I got my 8x8 Shutterfly book a couple of days ago and I am totally thrilled with it!!! It is a hard cover book with a custom cover. I chose to make this book about my children and so the cover is a layout featuring all three of them. I left the back cover blank and added a title to the spine. The whole look of the book is very professional!!

Inside the pages have a nice, substantial feel. Since I ordered the book spur of the moment in order to take advantage of a coupon, I was mostly pulling together previously made layouts. I used 12x12 layouts that I sized down to 8x8 at 300 dpi. I then uploaded the 8x8 jpegs to Shutterfly and drug them onto the pages in the order I had previously decided. I guess at first I must have clicked on the wrong option because Shutterfly wanted to automatically populate the pages with the pictures. The easiest thing was to quit out of that and have it start over with a completely blank book.

The pages themselves look amazing. The color is very good. The full bleed was perfect -- no white slivers. Compared to the originals, some of the layout edges were slightly trimmed, but as I didn't have text or photos up to the edge, they were not affected. The biggest consideration in terms of the design is to be careful of the gutter where the pages come together in the center of the book. Since the book is glued and "perfect-bound" it is really important to keep design elements and especially photos and text away from that edge. And even though this book is really gorgeous, I think if the pages were coordinated and made with a consistent color pallet it would be even more amazing!!

All and all the process was very easy and the quality is as good or better than I had hoped! The only (slight) reservation I have is that I think I read somewhere that the binding is glued and not sewed, so it is possible that the pages may eventually come loose. Hopefully that won't happen to my book -- at least for a very long while.

Well, that's my update on Shutterfly books! I would highly recommend them, especially when they are running sales and/or specials.

That's it for now!!

~J

So Many Changes...

Well 2010 is really starting out with change in the air! Both SAS (StoneAccentsStudio) and DDR (DigiDesignResort) are moving to new servers and SAS changed names to Digital Scrapbooking Studio. The good news is that DSS (formerly SAS) is mostly back online. As of this posting, however, DDR is still down. That's too bad because I was really hoping to do all of their challenges. Hopefully they will be back soon so that there will still be enough time.

I also finally ordered my very first photo book from Shutterfly. They sent me a coupon for a free 20 page hard-cover 8X8 book. All I needed to pay was tax, shipping and handling - quite a bargain! The problem was that the coupon was only good for a few days. There was no way I was going to have my ancestor book ready in such a short amount of time, but I had some layouts of my children and decided to center the book around them. Many of the layouts were made for challenges, and some I had made and never posted online. They really weren't made with the idea that they would be put together in a book, so the colors and designs are not at all coordinated. But, it will give me a chance to see the Shutterfly book quality for myself, and the price really couldn't be beat! I will probably get the book in about a week. I'll post a mini-review on it then.

I also just finished up a mini-kit for the January color challenge at DSS (formerly SAS!). I went with a vintage theme and decided to call it Grandma's Parlor. The preview is posted below. If you click on it, it will take you to my design blog with the download links.

Till later..
~j

Wrapping Up 2009!!

My ancestor book is coming along -- slowly!! I have been expanding my Autumnal Mist Mini kit that I made back in September to create additional papers and elements for my ancestor book because I like the colors so much. You can see what I have so far in the Lawrence and Ada album in my gallery at HeritageScrap.

Of course, with the Holiday Season I needed to take a break from that. I found some old winter/Christmas photos which needed to be scrapped!! I've also become active in the challenges at DigiDesignResort. Every month they run 2 sets of challenges: 1 for a free mega kit and the other for a discount coupon. (What a great deal!!)

I haven't forgot about designing either! I made 2 Christmas mini kits in December. They are both available on my design blog - designsbyjmdt. One is Blue Christmas and was made for the SAS December Color Challenge. The other is Vintage Christmas and was made for the RAK Member Mega Kit Challenge.

Well, Happy New Year everyone!!

That's it for now!
~j

Creating a Heritage Photobook - Part IV

The focus of this posting on photo books is design considerations when creating the layouts. It's good for me to get them written down so that I can go back to this post as a point of reference when creating books in the future.

First, due to the bleed and trim tolerances that are part of the printing process, it is necessary to be careful about placing elements too close to the edge. All journaling, titles, and captions as well as photos that should not appear cut off probably need to be at least an inch from the edge. In PSP, guidelines can be set up to mark the bleed and trim lines based on the spec from the publisher. (In the case of Shutterfly, I believe you can actually download templates with these lines already on them.) Further, if you create the layout as 12x12 and then plan to size down to 8x8, the "1 inch" margin needs to be set at 1.5 inches on the larger size in order for it to be 1 inch when sized down. So recommendation number one is to set up the bleed and trim guides before starting the layout.

Another thing I haven't mentioned before is the gutter. That is where the pages come together at the binding. In a perfect bound book, the pages will not lay flat. The binding and the curvature will obscure some of the inner part of the layout. This is yet another reason to keep the journaling, titles, captions and photos away from the edges.

The next design consideration is also related to the printing tolerances. It's probably a good idea to avoid using symmetric page borders. If the publisher doesn't trim the exact same amount from each edge, your layout will lose the symmetry, and it might look "off." This would include avoiding layouts in which a slightly smaller paper is centered and stacked on a larger paper for a page border. It might also include papers with borders built into the design. Just keep in mind when selecting the background papers how they would look trimmed - and since the backgrounds are extending to the bleed line, they are definitely going to be trimmed.

As a corollary to this, I would also avoid placing elements in such a way as to try to have them extend from the left hand page to the right. If the page trimming isn't exact enough, you may see a noticeable shift up or down and the result would look sloppy - like fabric stripes that don't line up at the seams!

The next few items may be more of personal taste, but in general I tend to prefer the subjects of the photos to face toward the center of the book (in the case of one or two large photos) or the center of the page (if using many smaller photos on a page). This is why it's nice to know if you are working on a left-hand page or a right-hand page when you are working on the layout. That way you can use appropriately oriented photos - or since we are working digitally, mirror the photo. Similarly, if I were working on a left-hand page and had text or journaling adjacent to the gutter, I would right-justify the text so that the jagged side would face the outside. But again, this may be more of a personal preference and not a hard and fast rule.

These are the design considerations that come to mind as I write this. There may be others, but these are the main things I want to keep in mind as I create the page layouts.

Well I think the topic of photobooks is pretty well exhausted! After I get mine done and printed I will try to write a follow-up on how it turned out. By the way, I have all but decided to use Shutterfly for the publisher. So we will see how it goes.

That's it for now.

~J

Creating a Heritage Photobook - Part III

In this post I wanted to talk about the way I have chosen to help me design the layout of the book. Back when I was working on the yearbook for my children's elementary school, we used a ladder diagram to define what would be on each page. Here's how it works. Draw a vertical line down the center of a piece of lined paper. (Or set up a 2 column document in a word processor.) The left column represents the left-hand side pages and the right column represents the right-hand side pages. Typically you would start numbering the ladder diagram with page 1 on the top line of the right-hand column, then page 2 and 3 on the next line, continuing on with even numbers on the left and odd numbers on the right. However, before you number the lines, double check how it's done with the publisher you chose. Lulu, for example, counts what would normally be page 1 as the title page and it is not counted as a "photo" page. In this case, page numbering starts with the first double page spread. Thus in this case, odd numbers are on the left and even are on the right. On the other hand, Shutterfly and Snapfish do not give you a special title page. The very first page is actually your first photo page and the double page spreads begin with pages 2 and 3. The bottom line is that you need to number your ladder diagram in accordance with the method used by the publisher you have selected.

Once you have a ladder diagram with the appropriate page number scheme, it is time to decide the content of each page. Just jot a quick description next to the page number. Of course, as you're doing this, you should be thinking in terms of the story you want to convey with your layouts and the photos and/or journaling that you have available. If you think that some topics will need two pages, try to organize the book so that those two pages fall together on a double page spread. At the end of this process you will have a road map that you can follow as you create the actual layouts. Of course, flexibility is important and the ladder diagram is not written in stone. You may need to make some adjustments and changes as you go along. But I find that using a ladder diagram as a tool, helps to keep me focused and provides me with a clear idea of what layouts still need to be done.

There are a couple of design considerations that I want to record here, so I guess there will be a Part IV to this blog topic!

That's it for now.

~J

Creating a Heritage Photobook - Part II

This post is a continuation of my previous post - Creating a Heritage Photobook - Part I. This post focuses on the part of the process dealing with deciding what scrap booking kit(s) to use and some things to consider with regard to that. I will then follow up with a third post to discuss a method for planning the book layout.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, for my Heritage book I have decided that I want it to have a cohesive look, and so I am leaning toward using one large mega-kit to build all of the pages. That way the book will hopefully have a cohesive, coordinated look, but still have variety. Another way to achieve this, as ForgetMeNots pointed out in a comment to my earlier post, is to choose multiple kits by the same designer, since many designers have a particular style that carries through in their various kits. Just to expand on that idea, if the colors aren't quite right, elements and/or papers could be recolored to coordinate.

Another thing to be aware of when choosing the kit(s) is the designer TOU. While I am starting to see more kits marked S4H/S4O (scrap for hire/scrap for others) friendly, many are PU (personal use) only. If you are planning on only printing out one book for yourself, personal use kits would be okay to use. I am thinking in my case, however, I would need the kit I use to be S4H/S4O friendly. Since the Heritage book I am making will focus on the lives of my grandparents and their ancestors, it may also be of interest to my aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins and possibly other relatives. And I would want them to be able to have copies should they want one. I would think that making additional copies of a photobook or even just a single layout or two would fall under the S4O (scrap for others) category. (Particularly if the recipient is paying the copying fees.)

It is my understanding that if you want to use a kit marked for personal use kit as I described above (i.e. making copies of layouts for others), you would have to contact the designer to see if she (or he) will allow it. It is possible that the designer will ask you to purchase a commercial license. This whole issue of licensing and commercial use vs. personal use is actually another reason why I am thinking about designing my own kit for the book I am making. Then I won't have to worry about copyrights, terms of use, commercial licenses or any of the legal stuff if later on down the line a relative would like a copy of one or more of the pages.

That's it for this post. I'll follow up with more on the planning the book layout later.

~J

Creating a Heritage Photobook - Part I

As I'm getting closer to putting my Heritage Photobook together, I thought I would record the process. This way I can go back and read it to refresh my memory when I want to make the next one! LOL! First off, I've been checking out some different photobook publishers and have found that different publishers offer different page sizes. That isn't to say that there isn't some overlap, but there are definitely different dimensions, particularly as you move away from a square format. Thus, in general, it is probably a good idea to evaluate and choose a publisher before creating layouts.I have narrowed my choices down to two or three and will probably post here when I make a final choice. I have decided on a nominal 8x8 square format, and all the publishers I am looking at support that size.

The second thing to be aware of is trim and bleed. I knew from my many years working on the elementary school yearbook that this was going to be a factor. Many of the complaints that people have deal with designs being cut off and/or white bands along the edges. This is because of the page trimming tolerance, possibly as much as 1/4 of an inch. This means that design might shift up, down, left or right by this amount. To avoid white bands, the background design paper needs to extend out each direction by this amount - that would be the bleed. The other part to this is that key elements of the design, and especially journaling, cannot fall outside of the potential trim area. If it does, it might possibly be cut off. All the publishers I'm looking at tell you their particular trim and bleed tolerances. Some even provide templates so you can see how far to extend your background papers as well as the limits of where to put your design.

So to recap, the first steps are to decide on the size and dimensions of the book, choose a publisher, and then to get the bleed and trim tolerance from the publisher. The next part of the process is to make decisions about the book content: which kit(s), how many pages, and what to include on each page. I'll break here and cover
those topics in Part II.

That's it for now.

~J

A Digi Scrapbook Site Worth Checking Out

There are tons of digital scrapbooking sites/stores on the internet. Many offer monthly challenges in which for just participating you can earn free mini-kits or store discount coupons. In the past year, I checked out a few of them and participated here and there. Recently I stumbled onto one that I think is really worth checking out. I think I first found DigiDesignResort by following a link on someone's blog. (Sorry, can't remember which blog. I tend to blog hop a lot - LOL!) The thing that is pretty cool about this site is that for participating in only 6 challenges you can get a free (full-sized) collab kit! Just six layouts, and a free kit! How cool is that! That's not all. They have a second set of six challenges which earn you a discount coupon to their store!

Now, to be honest, this is the first month that I have participated in the challenges at DDR. So far I have done 5 of the first set (so just one more for the free kit) and two of the second set. I'm anxious to actually get the free kit and check it out. This site also hosts scrapbooking design classes, so I am hoping that the quality of the free kit is going to be pretty high. Also, based on the preview, it looks like it is my style. (I like realistic elements over the cutesy.) It definitely should be usable for the vintage style layouts I like to do.

That's about it for now.

~J

Some Recent Layouts

The vast majority of digital scrapbooking layouts that I do are vintage layouts with heritage photos. However, I recently did a couple of layouts for some challenges using more current photos. Here are two that I really like and wanted to also post here.

This one above was shows my youngest son helping out in the kitchen at his Grandmother's. It is scrapped with the kit called Recipes by AngelFlight. I downloaded the kit about a year ago, so I don't know if it is still available or not, but it was perfect for the layout and I am really pleased with how it turned out.

This layout is also of my youngest son. These photos were taken shortly after school started. He needed some photos for a "Me" box or folder that he had to put together to introduce himself to the teacher and the class. For this layout I used the kit Thankful by SkrapperDigitals. It is available from SAS. I was also really happy with this one. I really like it the way it is, but will probably add some journaling before I print it out.

For the vintage photos I've been doing, check out the slide show in the right-hand column of this blog.

That's it for now. There's still some freebies over on my designsbyjmdt, so head on over there to check them out.

~J

Catching Up

Well, it looks like I neglected this blog for way too long!! Obviously the SAS designer contest is over and three very deserving designers now have stores there. It's well worth heading over to SAS and checking it out!

It's been a busy time around here, and although a couple of days ago I posted a new mini kit called Autumn Days on my design blog, I actually haven't done much scrapping or designing. I am currently working on a another batch of old photos that I got from my Mom. Mostly they are of her and her siblings as they were growing up, but there are also some of my Dad's side and even some of my brother and sister and I when we were young. I am scanning them and trying to organize them on my computer. (The scanning is taking forever!!) Many are in a small, square snapshot format, so I am scanning at a very high DPI with the hopes that I will be able to capture enough detail to enlarge them for scrap book layouts. There are also some old Polaroids which have gotten very dark. Hopefully I can lighten them up a bit in PSP so that they will be usable too!

I still have hopes of creating one or two photo books before the holidays. I've more or less dropped out of the Lifebook series over at HeritageScrap. There are a couple of reasons. First, I am thinking a photo book will look much more polished if the pages are made from the same kit. It would have to be a fairly large kit, however, so the exact sames papers and elements would not have to be repeated over and over and over. I am thinking about putting together my own kit for this and doing that would take some time. Second, I am thinking more of making a photo book than a life story book. Practically speaking, photo books (or printing photos to add to an album) are somewhat expensive, and I would rather spend the money on layouts containing primarily photos rather than layouts containing primarily words.

Well, that's about it for now. I still have to run some errands before the kids get home from school!!

September Challenges and Contests and a New Blog

In the digital scrapbooking world, I mostly hang out at three sites (in alphabetical order): HeritageScrap, RAKScraps, and StoneAccentsStudio. So I just thought I would post a little update on what's going on at these sites.

Over at RAKScraps, the monthly Mega kit has just been released and is available free to members until the end of the month. At the time of the mega kit release, they post the color palette and theme so that members can make coordinating kits. Mine is called Grungy Graffiti Girl and is available on my new design blog - designsbyjmdt. Click the link to hop on over and check it out.

SAS is continuing with their birthday bash. Voting should be in for the second round of their designer contest tomorrow. The field will then be narrowed down to 19. In the end, the top 3 designers will get stores at SAS. Hop on over there to pick up all the free minis the perspective designers are creating. In addition to the birthday celebration, they are also running their monthly challenges. I am hoping to finish up a mini for the color challenge soon, so check back for that.

At HeritageScrap they are starting up their second Lifebook Challenge. Each week you scrap a different aspect of a person's life and at the end you have a book chronicling the subject from birth on. This is the first week and the project is the cover. I haven't started mine, but am thinking I will probably join in this time around - just have to decide on the subject of the Lifebook. Now that I am posting my kits elsewhere, I will probably be posting more of my layouts on this blog, so that would include my Lifebook layouts.

That's about it. Check back soon.

Kit for SAS Birthday Bash

Over at Stone Accents Studio they are celebrating their birthday -- I think it's their second birthday. After the Mega Kit is released, they post the color palette and theme so that members (like me) can make and post additional coordinating kits.

In order to keep the zip file size down, I had to upload the kit in three parts: elements1, elements2, and papers. <strike>They can be downloaded with the links below. You can choose to download from 4shared or mediafire.</strike>
<strike>
</strike>
<strike>elements1 - 4shared</strike>
<strike>elements2 - 4shared</strike>
<strike>papers - 4 shared</strike>
<strike>
</strike>
<strike>OR </strike>
<strike>
</strike>
<strike>elements1 - mediafire</strike>
<strike>elements2 - mediafire</strike>
<strike>elements3 - mediafire</strike>

Sorry - freebie retired.

As always, please let me know if any of the links are broken. Also, I guess I have never mentioned this before, but if you create a layout with this kit or any of my other freebies, I would love to see what you've made. I started in the spring and made it through the freshman, sophomore, junior and half of senior lessons before I had to take a break because of the slide show. I just recently went back and finished up the senior lessons (still need to take the final), but I wanted to show you the layout I made for the last lesson. Most of the elements on the layout were "drawn" by me in psp except for some of the flowers which I tubed from a photo. As for the background, the sky/cloud background and the bricks are patterns included in psp. In addition, the textures I used on the grass, mulch and patio were also part of the program. The elements, including the staircase, window, flower box, trellis, birdbath/fountain, birdhouse, table and chairs, were the parts that I made. I was very happy with how it all came out and really wanted to share it on this blog. Between PSPU and some other tutorial sites, I have learned quite a few new techniques and am anxious to get working on a new kit.

Catching Up: Slide Show, Contest, etc

I can't believe how long it has been since my last post! It has been a very hectic time. Most of May I was consumed in putting together a slide show. Let me explain. For several years I have been the parent volunteer in charge of my children's elementary school yearbook (some years by myself and some years with partners). Since this was my youngest's last year at the school, it was also my last year for the yearbook. Well, the yearbook went to the publisher in April (it came out awesome by the way!!), and about that time I was asked about putting together a slide show for the end of year awards ceremony and also the end of year party. Since I have been taking digital photos of the kids the past five years for the yearbook, I had tons of pics. In order to have a lot of pictures of all the students in the class and still keep the length of slide show to about 10 minutes, I had to "scrap" the pictures to include multiple photos on each slide. This became a HUGE job!! I will probably shortly write a separate blog entry on how I did the slide show and the lessons learned since I had such a hard time finding information online. Fortunately, the slide show was finished on time and was a big hit with the students, parents and school staff. (Yeah!)

So after the slide show was finished in the beginning of June, it was on to fixing some computer problems. My older son's computer has a very serious virus and we still don't have it running, but we have managed to salvage what he needed from the hard drive. Then it was time to try to get the wireless network printer to work again. It stopped talking to the computers after a short power outage in mid-May. Luckily, I was able to get that working in spite of the lack of help from HP technical support - who informed me it's out of warranty! So with the printer back up and running there was partial success on the computer issues! I also needed to catch up on some genealogy correspondence and postings, and I really, really wanted to get back to scrapbooking - both layouts and design.

Earlier in May, before the slide show completely took over, I posted a layout at SAS for their heritage layout of the month contest. I was absolutely thrilled to find out I won the challenge and got a gift certificate to their online store!!! So, I think on that note, I'll end this rambling and post the layout below. The kit used is LilyPond - a free a SAS welcome kit. The photo is four generations of my Evans/Shaner/Miller line. The man holding the baby is my great-grandfather, Harry Evans. Standing next to him (probably on a box to make her taller) is his wife, Minnie Shaner Evans. Next to Minnie is her mother, Adeline Miller Shaner. Seated in the front is Adeline's step-mother, Elizabeth Fritz Miller. The baby is Harry Evans Jr. and the little girl is Cora Evans. They are the older siblings of my grandmother.

I Was Tagged!

I have just noticed that I was tagged by Lori Ruth. It is all about answering questions about yourself and then tagging some others to do the same. (I think that Lori Ruth already tagged most the people I know!!) So I'll check around some other blogs and come back and do this if I can find some people who haven't already been tagged.

Dusty Rose - My SAS May Color Challenge Mini-Kit

I've been busy working on another mini-kit. The rectangular and square frames are quite a bit larger than shown.

<strike>If you like them feel free to download from 4shared or mediafire.</strike> Sorry - freebie retired.

Fairies in Blue - Mini Kit

I know I haven't posted for a while, but hopefully that will get better. Also, there are some buttons and a glass stone circular frame. The kit is 300 dpi and the papers are full-size (12x12).

<strike>You can download it here</strike>. It was originally set for today, but it has now been delayed until April. I will let you know the exact date soon. In the meantime I am working on a small freebie kit to post here. I hope to have it ready in a few days. This is exciting for me, as it will be my first attempt at putting together a kit! I was originally hoping to have it ready today in lieu of the blog train, but I have been busy working on the yearbook for my youngest's elementary school. I hope you like it.
</a

Vintage Layout with Patterned Paper

I just learned a very easy way to make patterned paper from the tutorial posted at CountryDreamzScrappin by Joani. I tried it out with a snippet of vintage wallpaper from the GraphicsFairy. To complete the layout, I 'stapled' the patterned paper to a background page and then added a cluster frame from RaspberryRoadDesign along with my photo and journaling. The result is the layout posted below.

Layout for a Family Recipe Challenge

My original goal in learning digital scrapbooking has been to create an ancestor photo book. That's still my goal, but I've decided not to rush it so much. At first I was just trying to throw some layouts together to have enough for a 20 page book. But in rushing throught the layouts, I was creating ones that I wasn't all that happy with. So I've realized that I need to slow down and collect or make papers and elements that I will need. I also need to experiment, get ideas and inspiration from other people's layouts, and do some tutorials to practice various techniques.

I've joined a new yahoo group - digitalscrapbookingwithfriends - and they have posted links to some excellent tutorials. I was looking at the blending tutorials because I really like that look in other peoples layouts, but was never happy with how it turned out when I tried it in mine. Well, I went through some of the tutorials and have now completed a layout for the family recipe challenge at heritagescraps. I have a photo of my grandmother blended into the background. For this one, I used background paper from the OldTymeRose Collab kit from heritagescraps, elements from the Recipes kit by Angelflight Scraps, and a frame (which I modified to hold 3 photos instead of 2) from the kit NeverEndingStory by BeaCreations. And here is the final result.

Up and Running - Finally!!

Well, it's taken longer than I hoped, but I finally have a custom background and header I can live with! (at least for a while) It was a pain to get things centered and figure out colors, etc. I found some sites that had some beautiful blog layouts available for downloading and seriously considered using one of them. But in the end, I decided that I really wanted to make my own. So it took a little longer, but now it's done and I can finally get back to making more layouts for the ancestor book I am working on. I also want to get more into designing some custom elements and backgrounds for my layouts. We'll see how it goes....

Under Construction

This blog will be dedicated to my digital scrapbooking addiction.
